Not all solutions to sexual problems come in the form of a pill or trying a new technique. You can also help yourself in the bedroom by improving your eating habits. If you are what you eat, why not eat some foods that make you feel sexy? The science behind nutrition and its connection to better sexual function is real, and several studies support it. Below are some ideas to help you feel your best and eat to optimize sexual function.

What Health Means in the Bedroom

Certain processes must take place in your body in order for you to have great sex. For one, you must have healthy blood flow so your genitals are engaged throughout your activities. Your nerves must be capable of firing well, and your sex hormones should be in balance. When these three things line up, it’s a lot easier to have great sex. Of course, your choice of partner, setting, and timing will also come into play. But your nutrition can help you be in the best physiological shape to have hot sex.

Which Foods to Add to Your Diet

Most people have a baseline idea of what it means to eat healthily. Eating healthily is an essential step toward elevating your sexuality. To get started, it’s crucial that you eat foods that make you feel good. You should feel full and energized, not bloated or uncomfortable after a meal.

But more specifically, some foods can help your sexual function. The first foods to seek out are naturally high in nitrates, typically root vegetables like carrots, beets, celery, or even leafier veggies like bok choy. These can help blood flow to your genitals and give your sexual stamina a boost.

Next, add in leafy greens. You don’t have to choose a specific kind; just get whatever tastes best to you. Not only are these a healthy choice in general, but they can help lower the amount of stress hormone you’re producing, giving you a chance to feel more relaxed during sex. When you feel comfortable, it’s easier to overcome sexual issues like performance anxiety. They can also help with blood flow, which could alleviate certain erectile function issues. They are chock full of antioxidants and could help raise testosterone levels, which people of all genders need in order to reach peak arousal. They’re basically a superfood for sex!

Ensure you’re getting enough potassium and zinc in your diet, too. If you don’t get enough potassium, you may experience more erectile unpredictability. Zinc positively contributes to your arousal levels. You can get potassium by eating oranges, bananas, and other kinds of fresh produce. And you can get zinc in beans, nuts, whole grains, poultry—or even an oyster.

How to Know if Your Diet Is Supporting Your Sex Life

Some foods will help you in the short term, and you’ll feel results almost immediately. Just like you may feel heartburn right away if you eat spicy foods or alcohol, the benefits of some healthy foods can help instantly as your system digests them. Others offer more of a benefit long-term after you’ve incorporated them into your diet for a while. But there are two components to eating healthy for hotter sex: one is incorporating healthy foods into your diet, and the other is skipping the foods that will interfere with your diet. It’s just as important to avoid highly sweet or fatty foods as it is to eat healthy meals.

You’ll know you’re eating the right things when you feel better. You should notice more energy, fewer digestive issues, and an increase in your interest in sex. Give your diet changes a few months before assessing so that your body has time to reap all the nutritional benefits.
