Episode Overview
On this episode of the Sexology Podcast, we talk about sexual assault and why so many people don’t speak up when these unfortunate things happen with our guest, Dr. Carmen Roman. We cover the overall topic of sexual assault, or more specifically why so many women don’t report.
Sometimes survivors wait to report. Many people get confused as to why someone would do this. A majority of the time, it has to do with shame and guilt. There’s a stigma that ‘only bad girls are getting rape.’ We don’t want to believe bad things happen to good people. Unfortunately, that’s how it is sometimes.
We tend to question the victim and tend not to believe the victim. Even if you know a person or are married to a person, it can still be sexual assault. If you have experienced sexual assault, it’s your choice to decide if you want to report. You should also really consider speaking to a therapist. Note that finding the right therapist can be like buying shoes. You have to try a few pairs on before you find the right fit.
